On Monday 24th September 2018, the Lord-Lieutenant attended a memorial service for the Isle of Wight’s Mary Ellis, a Second World War pilot and trailblazer for women in the RAF, which was held at St Mary’s Church, Cowes.
Following the service, the Lord-Lieutenant along with guests, gathered at Northwood House to view an exhibition of Mary’s life and to watch a fly past of Spitfires from Boultbee Aviation at Goodwood and Biggin Hill, London.
Mary, who died in July aged 101, always said the Spitfire was her favourite aircraft.
