Friends of Freshwater Library
They have taken over the support for this classic local library, and continue to run and expand its services by running monthly events, running a local community cinema in the library on a big screen, selling retail items such as local calendars and tea towels, arranging talks and offering a varied programme of events and clubs.
This has been done by a team of volunteers who help run the library by committing to a weekly sessions, be it volunteer librarians, fundraising, doing the garden, running events or clubs, producing catering or anything else that needs to be done. The passion of the volunteers, to preserve the future of the library and to increase its offerings to the local community has been outstanding.
The Committee, who have a wide range of talent and expertise have built up over 200 local paid up members to support their efforts and run an outstanding volunteering organisation. This is a truly community based organisation. The standard of organisation and volunteering is very high and the Friends provide a first class facility for people of all ages.
The Friends of Freshwater Library is one of two charities on the Island to be awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year.
